Contract Signing Ceremony of Renewable Energy Microgrid Pilot Project

06 07 2020 - 15:00 PM

LECO signed a contract with consortium of DIMO and DHYBRID GMBH to construct the Sri Lanka’s first ever national grid-tied Renewable Energy based Microgrid at the premises of University of Moratuwa. This project is funded as a grant from Asian Development Bank (ADB). This project will embark a new paradigm in the field of distributed generation in Sri Lanka. LECO Chairman Mr. Athula De Silva, Director, Mr. Janath S.Vidanage, Act. General Manager, Dr. Narendra De Silva and DIMO CEO Mr. Gahanath Pandithage, Managing Director, Mr. Sarath Algama, Managing Director Mr. Wijith Pushpawela and other project officials from LECO and DIMO were present at the occasion.
A microgrid is a localized group of electricity sources and loads that typically operates isolated or intendem with the national grid having the capability of disconnect and operate autonomously if it is tied with the national grid. As part of its road map to a smarter grid with distributed generation, LECO requested financial assistance from ADB to develop a pilot microgrid project and owing to its academic significance University of Moratuwa was selected as the location. Instead of just being a conventional microgrid, this contains a research and development facility which will be an incubator and operational test bed for innovative smart grid movements and microgrids in Sri Lanka. Previously LECO and University of Moratuwa had signed a Memorandum of Understanding on this project identifying certain key performance indicators to achieve subsequent to the implementation. It is expected to attract more international research collaboration to Sri Lanka through this facility.
Prioritizing its commitments towards improving efficiency, reliability, resilience and independence over the traditional utility grid, LECO plans to replicate the project in long run, as an extension to traditional distribution network which catalyze the absorption of renewable based distribution generation in to the distribution network.
